Dr. Charles Colin
Famous Trumpet Teacher

1996 N.Y. Brass Conference: "I've heard quite a few trumpet clinics in my day. Yours was the best that I have ever heard. Ever!" "...without doubt, an extremely talented, knowledgeable, and gifted trumpeter and modern day artist."

UPDATE
A GREAT time was had by all at the 2003 Mars Hill College Trumpet Retreat Weekend with myself along with Mike Hackett, Jay Meachum, and organizer/host Rusty Smith as guest artists. A "Classical" recital and a "Jazz" night where we played some of James Morrison's arrangments from his "Scream Machine" recording. The students closed the event with a stirring trumpet choir performance. Rusty Smith did a GREAT job putting this event together while holding down the full time gig as lead trumpet with Louis Mandrell.

Jazz Vermont 2002 was bigger than ever with 4 big bands and 2 combos! Many fine trumpet players from across the country attended and we escaped any casualties all week....with 5 hours of rehearsing per day and a 45 minute trumpet sectional....it was quite a work out!
Frank Vardaros and I got yet another chance to explore uncharted territory on our yearly "trumpet battle" on Night in Tunisia on the faculty concert. ALWAYS a good time!

UPDATE

Jazz Vermont 2001 was once again a great hang with some great musicians! The Van Cleave Big Band was swingin' once again as we pushed the limits of all performers while playing great charts with tons of solo space for everyone. We also got the chance to perform once again with Jerry Bergonzi ...WOW!

UPDATE

What a pleasure to get the chance to lecture on Jazz Improvisation and also get a chance to perform with Dr. Michael Woods at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY.

The "Doctah" has a great bunch of students that are getting a first hand look at jazz via Dr. Mike and the many friends and musicians that he gets to visit.

UPDATE

Berkelee College of Music in Boston, MA was the scene of a recent whirlwind one hour trumpet clinic. I got the chance to meet many of the fine students and professionals in the Boston area. Thanks go out to Frank Vardaros for setting up the clinic!

UPDATE

Jazz Vermont 2000 went off without a glitch once again! This time I conducted the newest big band at the camp. For our first year's concert, we played some swingin' Basie as well as some burning Be-Bop with this year's Jerry Bergonzi/Mark Van Cleave battle on Groovin' High.

With all of the playing, rehearsing, and late night hangs ...we even managed to squeeze in a trumpet clinic on the final day.

UPDATE
Just finished a clinic at Miami Dade School of the Arts High School. You haven't heard a high school jazz band until you've heard this band! Very mature players for any age let alone high school kids. J.B. Dias is really doing some fine work teaching these young players! If you get a chance to hear them....don't miss it!

UPDATE
While playing in N.C. for the past two weeks, I was able to meet with several trumpet players at local Universities and High Schools. UNC, NC School of the Arts, Apalachian State Univ., etc. NC is a hot bed of trumpet playing and teaching! Many good players and teachers like Rusty Smith, Joe Phelps, Jim Ketch, etc.

UPDATE
Hello from N.Y.! WOW!, another successful Brass Conference sponsored by Colin Publications! Thanks go out to Alan Colin and Dr. Charles Colin for the invite. The 10:30 a.m. lecture got started a bit early. It was great to see a packed house that early in the morning. I overnighted it from Baltimore and arrived at the Hotel at 7:00 a.m. Aside from a case of walking pnuemonia, I had a great time.

I had the opportunity to meet with many of the attending trumpet players before the lecture and again after the lecture. My books were a sell out......imagine that! If you get the chance to check out the conference...DO IT!

Many exibitors and trumpet stuff to check out. Zig Kanstul was there....as were many of the different horns he builds.

And all of the profits go for brass schalorships....can't beat that!

UPDATE

Just got done playing Baton Rouge and New Orleans, LA. BOY!.....The food there is GREAT! I also got a chance to hang out and talk shop with James West and a few of his students at LSU. If you get near there, check them out.....GREAT PEOPLE and they also helped me track down one of the biggest and tastiest calzones I have ever eaten!

UPDATE

Special thanks go out to Donovan Bankhead for all of his help setting up the clinic in Tulsa! If you find yourself in Tulsa, OK, stop by Tulsa Band and say hi. Donovan works and teaches trumpet at the store. They stock a nice selection of Bach and Kanstul trumpets and also have a very good brass repairman for those quick fixes.

The Tulsa clinic originaly was scheduled at the same time as a pre scheduled show. At the last minute, we had to reschedule the clinic for early that morning. We also did a late night Denny's hang and rap session for the guys who missed the early clinic after the closing show in Tulsa. There will be another clinic session planned in the area when I get back to Oklahoma City between Sept. 16 th and 22nd. This will be held at the University of Central Oklamoma.
